Ban on Cars Should Be Decided By Fitness Level, Not Age: Government
Highlights
Instead of the ban on vehicles being dependent on its age, the ministry wants the proposed ban to be dependent the condition of the vehicle. After the National Green Tribunal's order the ministry had sought time to draft a policy to check such vehicles, it now wants to bring in all-encompassing measures to rein pollution.
It is already working to implement Bharat Stage V and VI norms sooner than planned, i.e. move the respective deadlines to 2019 and 2023, respectively.
Furthermore, the government is looking for scrap-yards for vehicles that will be found unfit. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways had recently mentioned that they are looking to create a zone(s) for scrapping and processing old vehicles. He further added that these may come up at ports in Chennai and, probably, Kandla too.
