Bajaj Chetak Set to Make a Comeback in the Indian Scooter Segment?
Highlights
Compared to passenger and commercial vehicles in India, the two-wheeler segment has continued to grow phenomenally. Interestingly, the segment owes this growth to scooters and not motorcycles. Let me take this chance to draw your attention to the world's third largest motorcycle maker - Bajaj Auto; the company reported a 21 per cent drop in its motorcycle sales in February, 2015 as compared to the numbers in February, 2014. So how does the company intend to deal with this situation? Simple! By bringing back the nation's most iconic scooter brand - Chetak.
Word has it that the motorcycle manufacturer has re-registered the 'Chetak' brand name as it prepares to re-enter the Indian scooter market. Fondly referred to as Humara Bajaj, which was the scooter's tagline, this Bajaj baby had the nation going crazy. So much so, that at one point, the scooter came along with years of waiting period. Despite this, the company decided to give in to the rising popularity of motorcycles. The company ceased the production of Chetak, which was once the largest-selling scooter in the world, somewhere in 2006. In December, 2009, Bajaj Auto announced its decision to exit the scooter segment in order to focus on motorcycles.
However, given the company's struggles, and the growth witnessed by the scooter segment in India, Bajaj would be wise to tap the Chetak legacy. Though Bajaj Auto seems set with its plan to bring in 6 six new bikes in India in 2015, we are not quite sure when the scooter will make it to its impending launches list, if at all.
