Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend, Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) has announced that it will name the first corner of the Sakhir track in honour of Michael Schumacher. The seven-time world champion remains in a state of coma after a skiing accident in the French Alps two months ago.

If you know your motorsport bit, you'll know that Schumacher had won the inaugural Bahrain GP in 2004 but before that Schumacher advised the team behind the Bahrain GP during the building of the track in the early 2000s, and he also made his return to the sport at the 2010 Bahrain GP after three seasons of staying away from it.

This is not the first corner to be named after the german former F1 driver. The fast left-right turn 8/9 combination at the Nurburgring circuit also gets the distinction of having his name. It was renamed as the 'Schumacher S' during the 2007 European Grand Prix.

"From his first appearance at the BIC in 2004, he immediately became an inspiration for all those who love motorsport in the Kingdom and it is therefore natural for us to recognize him in this way. The team at the BIC continues to offer Michael and his family its best wishes." said Mr. Zayed Al Zayani, BIC Chairman in a report.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Bahrain International Circuit and what better way to kick start the celebrations than to honour one of greatest racers in the game.
