Auto Expo 2016: Volkswagen Tiguan Makes Indian Debut

Volkswagen unveiled its India-bound premium SUV - Tiguan - at the 2016 Auto Expo. The seven-seater SUV is based on VW's MQB platform which is also shared by the Skoda Octavia and Audi A3.

    Revealed for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year in September, the India-bound Volkswagen Tiguan also broke cover at the 2016 Auto Expo. Scheduled for a launch in India in 2017, the seven-seater premium SUV from the Volkswagen group is based on the new MWB platform which is also used in cars like Skoda Octavia and Audi A3.

    Th second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a 2-litre diesel engine that delivers 148bhp. However, the German carmaker is yet to announce specs for the Indian model. The VW Tiguan also has safety features like Front Assist City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.

    Thanks to the MQB platform, the new Tiguan is claimed to be 50Kg lighter than the existing version. Apart from being lighter, the new SUV is 60mm longer, 33mm lower and 30mm wider than the current version. Even the wheelbase has been upped by 77mm measuring 2,681mm.

    VW will locally produce the Tiguan in India to keep the cost low. The premium entry level SUV will go on sale in 2017, and will take on the likes of new Ford Endeavour, new Toyota Fortuner, and Chevrolet Trailblazer.
