Auto Expo 2016: Upcoming New Cars That May Be Showcased

The 2016 Delhi Auto Expo is just around the corner and carmakers are gearing up to showcase their fleet of new cars. At the front of the pack will be Indian carmakers Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki both of which are expected to show-off at least 3 new products. Here's a look at some of the upcoming new models that will be showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo in February:
1. Maruti Suzuki YBA / Vitara Brezza
Maruti Suzuki is all set to jump into the sub-compact SUV segment with the all new Vitara Brezza which is also referred to by its codename, YBA. The sub-4 metre SUV is expected to rival the Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300. Based on the iV-4 concept, the Vitara Brezza is expected to be feature rich and may be powered by Maruti's existing range of 1.2-litrea and 1.4 litre petrol engines as well as a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel unit. An in-house diesel engine unit has also been confirmed to be in the pipeline. The bigger XA Alpha-based Vitara is expected to launch sometime in 2017.

2. Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis compact crossover is the second car expected to be showcased at Maruti Suzuki's pavilion at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. Unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the Ignis is expected to come with 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel powertrain options. Transmission options may include a CVT gearbox in addition to a standard manual gearbox. The car is based on Suzuki's iM4 concept and will offer a compact body-shape and a simple, highly practical interior design.

3. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R MPV
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been one of the Indian carmaker's many success stories as it offered customers a spacious cabin and tall-boy design at a very reasonable price point. 2016 is likely to see a multi-seater variant of the Wagon R enter the Indian market which first broke cover in 2013 at the Indonesian International Motor Show. The Wagon R MPV (codename: YCA) is expected to seat 7 and yet come in at under 4-metres in length. The car may get the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10's 1.0-litre engine although 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel powertrains have also been rumoured. An AMT gearbox version of the Wagon R may also be introduced considering the overwhelming response received by the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT.

4. Tata Zica/Kite Sedan
With the Tata Zica expected to launch in January, the Indian manufacturer is slated to follow up with the launch of a sub-compact sedan based on the Zica hatchback. Originally thought to be called the Kite, Tata's upcoming sub-compact sedan will be built on its hatchback twin's XO platform with engine options expected to be borrowed from the Zica as well. As yet, the Indian carmaker hasn't released the official moniker for the sedan.

5. Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon (codename: X104) will be the Indian carmaker's entrant into the hot-selling compact SUV market. The car, which was first showcased in concept form at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, will take on the likes of the popular Ford EcoSport and newly launched Mahindra TUV300. The car will be based on a lightly modified version of the platform that underpins the Tata Bolt and Tata Zest.

6. Tata Hexa
The Tata Hexa crossover SUV is the third hotly anticipated car from Indian carmaker Tata's stable that is due to launch in India next year. It will come in as the successor to Tata's flagship premium SUV, the Tata Aria. The Hexa made its debut in concept form at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show that was held in March and has been spotted testing in production guise for some time now.

7. Honda Accord
The previous Honda Accord was sold in India for a period of 5 years before being discontinued due to the arrival of more economical options, both in terms of mileage and in terms of cost. However Honda is all-set to re-launch its full-size sedan in India. The company is also expected to bring the Honda Accord Hybrid to rival the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Besides the hybrid powertrain, Honda will offer a standard 2.4-litre petrol option as well. A 3.5-litre V6 variant of the Honda Accord may also arrive at a later date, depending on the market reaction that the car receives upon its launch.

8. Honda BR-V
The Honda BR-V compact SUV has been confirmed to arrive in India in 2016 by the President of Honda Cars India, Katsushi Inoune. The car is based on the Honda Brio platform and as a result, features design cues from other cars that share the same platform like the Honda Mobilio MPV. The 7-seater Honda BR-V is likely to borrow its engine line from the Honda City so expect it to come with an option of a 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel powertrains. Transmission options could include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a CVT autobox.

9. Datsun redi-GO
The Datsun GO was launched in India some time ago but hasn't been able to find its footing in the viscous and highly competitive budget hatchback segment. However parent company Nissan, is now ready to launch an even cheaper option in the form of a hatchback inspired by the Datsun redi-GO concept which was showcased at last year's Delhi Auto Expo. The new hatchback will be built on the CMF-A platform and will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800.

10. Datsun GO-Cross
The Datsun GO-Cross is another member of the Datsun GO family that is set to launch in India in 2016. The compact crossover is based on the Datsun GO+ MPV platform. Datsun is yet to reveal any other details regarding the upcoming crossover but its initial images suggest that it will compete against and in terms of pricing, undercut cars like the Toyota Etios-Cross and Hyundai i20 Active.

11. Fiat-Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee
Fiat-Chrysler may finally be launching its iconic American Jeep sub-brand in India next year and is expected to set the ball rolling with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee currently sold internationally, features a 3.0-litre V6 diesel powertrain that is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The engine is good for 237bhp and a whopping 569Nm of torque. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is likely to compete with premium brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volvo, and Land Rover. It will arrive in India in CBU form.

12. Fiat-Chrysler Jeep Wrangler
The iconic Jeep Wrangler is also set to make its Indian bow sometime next year. Whereas the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in as a luxurious premium SUV, the Wrangler is a rugged off-roader, the looks of which has inspired a lot of Mahindra cars in India, particularly the Mahindra Thar. Like the Grand Cherokee, the Jeep Wrangler will arrive in India as a CBU unit although the company may decide to bring it to the country in CKD form at a later date. Fiat has also begun construction of a Jeep manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon that will begin producing the low-cost Jeep C-SUV and Jeep Renegade in India by 2017.

13. Volkswagen Sub-Compact Sedan
Volkswagen has been working on a Polo-based Sub-Compact Sedan which it has announced, will be unveiled at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. The car is expected to come in below the Volkswagen Vento in the company's line-up and could be offered with the same engine options as the Volkswagen Polo hatchback.

15. Volkswagen Tiguan
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a premium SUV that is based on the same MQB platform that underpins cars like the Skoda Octavia and Audi A3. Power will likely be delivered by a 2.0-litre engine good for 148bhp or 187bhp depending on the state of tune. Transmission will be provided by a 6-speed DSG gearbox. The worthy offroader is expected to arrive in India with the capability to seat 7 and is reported to come with a 4WD system.

16. SsangYong Tivoli
Mahindra is aiming at finally bringing the SsangYong Tivoli compact SUV to India given the colossal demand that the segment is currently generating. The company has already launched the Mahindra TUV3OO and has only recently unveiled the KUV1OO in an attempt to take on hot-selling competitors like the Hyundai Creta and Ford EcoSport. The SsangYong Tivoli, which was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, is likely to come in at a slightly higher price point than its Indian cousins.

17. Chevrolet Spin
The Chevrolet Spin MPV is all ready to jump into India's people carrier segment after its budget cousin, the Chevrolet Enjoy, failed to wrestle away any share of the market from more popular competitors like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The Spin is expected to be more spacious than the Ertiga and is expected to be powered by either a 1.5-litre petrol or 1.3-litre diesel engine. Transmission options could include a 5-speed manual box or a 6-speed autobox.

18. Jaguar XE

19. Volvo S90
The Volvo S90 executive sedan was revealed earlier this year and features almost every new luxury and safety technology found on the Volvo XC90 SUV. The body shape is a lot slicker than other Volvo's thanks to its minimalist yet classy exterior design that should see it hold a flame to its other European rivals. The Volvo S90 will also offer a host of next-gen safety features since safety is an aspect that the Swedish carmaker is famed for.

20. Toyota Vios
Toyota seems to have missed the boat in the mid-size sedan segment as cars like the Honda City have been a huge success in India. However, the Japanese firm is now all set to rival such cars by launching the Toyota Vios. The car is expected to arrive with a choice of a 1.5-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engine units.

22. Audi A5
The Audi A5 luxury sedan will finally be launched in India next year. The car has been doing its rounds internationally without having seen a major update since 2012 and is likely to arrive in India in its facelifted avatar. Reports suggest that it will be offered in India in either Coupe or Sportback shape. The new A5 is based on the A4's MLB Evo platform which should see it shed around 120kgs.

23. BMW 1 Series Sedan
After being displaced from the top of the luxury car market in India in 2013, 2016 will see BMW try to reclaim its crown which will be spearheaded by the upcoming BMW 1 Series sedan. The car will be based on the recently unveiled BMW Concept Compact Sedan which was showcased at the 2015 Auto Guangzhou Motor Show. The car is based on the current 1 Series hatchbacks UKL platform and will become the first BMW sedan to feature a front-wheel drive layout.

24. Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang is arguably one of the world's most famous cars to ever have existed. The car is expected to feature either an economical 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine or a far more powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine option.

25. Nissan X-Trail
After being discontinued in 2014 due to abysmal sales figures, Nissan is all set to re-launch its X-Trail SUV in India next year. The Nissan X-Trail may also arrive with a 4x4 layout and will challenge cars like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Santa Fe.
