Audi premiered the concept of a next generation infotainment system with fully integrated Android platform at the Google I/O developer conference. The carmaker says that the new, open system architecture for in-car infotainment showcased in the Q8 sport concept opens up new perspectives, which will eventually allow the development of connectivity services to be greatly accelerated. It must be noted that the Audi Q8 sport concept technology platform already has Android on board. With that being said, this is the first time new services have been fully integrated into Audi's infotainment system. While the navigation map continues to use the HERE database, the driver can also choose to use Google Maps.

The new functions, including the streaming service Spotify, Google Play Music and Google Assistant all run on the large MMI touch display in the centre of the dashboard. The information is also visible in the Audi virtual cockpit in the driver's direct field of view. Furthermore, a message centre for incoming messages and calls completes the new services in the show car.

With over 1.4 billion active users worldwide, Android is the world's most popular mobile platform. Combined with the expertise of the open Android community, opening up prospects such as new apps finding their way into the cars as additional connected services provided they meet Google and Audi's requirements. Other than shorter update cycles the concept will also proffer a significantly greater diversity of services and broad international availability for customers.

This is only one of the several new avenues the company is currently pursuing. In fact, it started commenced an investment programme that will use a total of €24 billion for the development of a new model and innovative technologies by 2019.
