Amazon Likely To Use Mahindra Treo Zor Electric 3-Wheelers For Logistics Operations: Report

Online retail giant Amazon is reportedly in talks with the home-grown electric vehicle manufacturer, Mahindra Electric to procure the latter's electric three-wheeler Treo Zor for its logistic operations. Online retail giant Amazon is reportedly in talks with the home-grown electric vehicle manufacturer, Mahindra Electric to procure the latter's electric three-wheeler Treo Zor for its logistic operations. According to ET Auto, Amazon will not directly buy them, but would rather help its logistics providers to buy and operate vehicles on its behalf. The Mahindra Treo Zor electric three-wheelers are likely to be used for logistic operations in Asian markets. The report states that Mahindra has already delivered a few test mules of the Treo Zor to Amazon's logistic partners in Japan and Vietnam, and has additionally bagged an order for 1000 EVs from Amazon India.

We have reached out to Mahindra Electric for an official confirmation on the matter, however, at the time of publishing this article, our email remained unanswered. Reportedly, Mahindra Electric has already delivered 300 units of Treo Zor to domestic e-commerce logistics providers, including Amazon, and is further deliver 800 more units by April 2021. The report has quoted Mahindra Electric's CEO, Mahesh Babu, stating that the company has deployed its EVs for deliveries of all major e-commerce providers including Amazon, Flipkart, Jio Mart and BigBasket.

Reportedly, Babu has confirmed that the company has shipped a few units of Treo Zor to logistics partners of Amazon in other Asian markets and that it was also seeing demand from a UK county for its passenger and cargo electric three-wheelers. In fact, in January 2021, Mahindra Logistics launched its own cargo delivery service under the brand name - Edel to offer last-mile logistics and fulfilment for customers in e-Commerce, FMCG and other domains. The company said that it will initially cater to six major cities across the country including Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata. It plans to expand its reach to a total of 14 cities in the next 12 months.

As for Amazon, last year, in January 2020, the company's CEO, Jeff Bezos had announced that induct about 10,000 electric vehicles to its delivery fleet in India, by 2025. It is part of the company's pledge to introduce one lakh vehicles to its global fleet by 2030 and subsequently become carbon neutral by 2040. Back then, the company has said that it is working with a few Indian companies in order to ready a fleet of electric vehicles in its delivery fleet to ensure that last mile deliveries are sustainable.
