  • BMW engineers developed the new system specifically for electric vehicles
  • The system can offer optimise traction, driving stability in ICE cars too
  • All BMW Group vehicles with front-, rear-, AWD setup will get the system

BMW Group has announced that all future BMW and MINI cars will come with the company's latest traction control system, which was introduced in the new BMW i3s electric car. The new sportier version of the BMW i3 made its global debut last year and one of biggest addition to the car was BMW's new traction control system, which was adapted specifically to the instantaneous power delivery of the BMW eDrive system. BMW claims that this new traction control system offers 50-times faster responses for greater traction and driving stability.

Unlike the conventional driving stability systems, in BMW's new i3s traction control system, the control process is calculated directly in the powertrain instead of in a remote unit that requires long signal paths. This particular development has shortened the control cycle, thus enabling the system to offer the aforementioned faster response time and better traction even in adverse weather and road conditions when pulling away in active Brake Energy Regeneration phases or when accelerating out of tight corners.

Interestingly, though the new traction control system has been introduced for the first time, with the new BMW i3s, the technology is not limited to cars that use pure electric drivetrain. BMW claims that the innovative traction control system can also optimise traction, driving stability and driving dynamics in vehicles with internal combustion engines. This is why the company has now decided to introduce the system in all future BMW and MINI models, irrespective of the fact whether they come with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive setup.

As for the BMW i3S, the car comes with a zero-emission electric motor that is powered by a 33 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a power output of 181 bhp electric motor which generates peak torque of 269 Nm. It's the same capacity battery that the regular i3 gets, but in the i3s, the motor generates an additional power of 14 bhp and addition torque of over 20 Nm. The new BMW i3s also features a Sport mode which can go from 0-100 kmph in just 6.8 seconds with top speed of 161 kmph.
