Highlights
Every time your headlights get damaged and need to be replaced—you often make a trip down to the mechanic without a delay. But what if we told you that replacing headlights is like the back of your hand and can be easily done at home by you by simply following a few steps? Want to be a pro at replacing headlights? Here's a quick guide to replacing your headlights.
How to replace your car's headlights?
Headlights are one of the most important parts of a car, and they are lifesavers during nighttime driving and in wintery areas. Can you even imagine driving without headlights on? It would be like running around with a blindfold on your eyes.
The following are the steps that you need to follow one by one to replace headlights:
Step 1: Find out the type of bulb you need
Before starting anything else, you need to find out what type of bulb you need for your car. Headlight bulbs come in various sizes and shapes, and hence, it's important to find out which type is suitable for your car. The information can be found in your car's manual, but if you're unable to find out anything, then just seek the help of an automobile expert.
Step 2: Turn off the car
To replace the headlight, first, turn off the car and wait until it cools down.
Step 3: Open the hood
To get to the headlights, lift the hood of the engine.
Step 4: Remove cables and dust cover
Disconnect the lamp connections located behind the headlights, and then you are ready to replace the bulb. Depending on the model of your car, you might need to remove the dust cover, or the battery, or the air filter as well.
Step 5: Replace the damaged bulb
Put on latex gloves and unscrew the damaged bulb carefully and replace it with a new one. But be sure to not touch the glass of the bulb. Now, reconnect the cables and put back everything that you removed.
Step 6: You've successfully replaced the headlights
Once done, test out the new bulb to check if it's working or not. If it's working, then you've successfully replaced the headlights. If the bulb isn't working, then recheck the connecting wires.
How to take care of your headlights?
Taking care of your headlights is a part of car care and is one of the most important steps that shouldn't be missed. Be it driving—at night or during bad weather, headlights ensure that you have a good view of the road ahead.
Following these tips will help you keep your headlights in good shape:
-
Keep the headlight lenses clean. Over time, dust and dirt accumulate, turning them dirty and cloudy. This makes seeing the road hard.
-
If one of the headlights gets damaged or fused, replace both the headlights to ensure an equal amount of brightness.
-
Look for cracks in the headlights and seek professional help when in doubt.
-
Make sure the alignment of headlights is neither high nor low—as this can create blind spots for the driver.
-
Have a regular headlight cleaning routine and make routine inspections.
