As per the data based on the report provided by the Times of India, in the year 2018, there were as many as 7966 fatal accidents. Since then, the number has been on the rise.
Hence, the Gujarat state transport department needed to enact a law that would be strict enough to make every individual obey the law. The State Government revised the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 to ensure that higher fines were collected for various types of offences in Gujarat.

Discussed below are the fines and the law-breaking for which they are imposed:
- If both the driver and the rider are caught without a helmet, the fine will be Rs. 500.
- If you drive a car without having your seat belt on, you will be charged Rs. 500 for that.
- In case you are caught overloading a two-wheeler, you will be charged Rs.100.
- If you are a first-time offender who is talking over the phone while driving, you will be charged Rs. 500.
- There are indeed a few variations of pricing when it comes to the matter of wrong side driving. For a three-wheeler; you will be charged Rs. 1500 while the charges are Rs. 3000 for motor vehicles and Rs. 5000 for heavily loaded vehicles.
- If you fail to show your proper driving license, you can be charged Rs.2000 for it.
- If you are caught driving an unregistered vehicle, there are various types of rates and fines. For bikes, you can be charged Rs. 1000, while the rates are Rs. 3000 for four-wheelers. The fines are also Rs. 5000 for heavy vehicles.
- In a graver situation, if you are caught driving under the influence of narcotics and similar substances, you may be charged Rs. 10,000 and face up to six months of prison. Based on the nature of the crime, you may be charged Rs. 15,000 along with facing two years of imprisonment.
Conclusion
According to information delivered by the Parliament of India, the number of accidents and road mishaps in specific areas in the nation came down by roughly 9% after implementation of the new Act. Gujarat also saw such cases coming down by a stellar 22%. The accident rates in Gujarat are now on the lower side and the stricter rules are certainly a reason for the same.
