Today, in the sea of red lights and traffic jams, cars with automatic transmissions are a boon - they bring ease and convenience to everyday driving. Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, leads the charge when it comes to offering automatic transmissions. In a bid to cater to car-buyers in different segments, Maruti Suzuki offers three types of automatic transmission technologies across its lineup - AGS, CVT, and AT.

Let's understand how each of these 3 automatic transmission technologies by Maruti Suzuki work: -

    AGS Technology

The AGS or Auto Gear Shift is an automated manual transmission technology pioneered by Maruti Suzuki that can be credited for making automatic transmissions accessible in cars across various segments in India. The system uses an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator that automatically performs clutch and gear shift operations. It makes every day driving convenient, and with an option of a manual mode in place, you can switch between Automatic and Manual modes with a simple shift of the gear lever. The Auto Gear Shift is optimised for smoother gear changes, which helps in achieving fuel efficiency that's at par with a manual transmission.

Maruti Suzuki is the first automaker to employ the technology in the Celerio hatchback way back in 2014 and since then, AGS has made its way into several models including the Alto K10, Celerio, S-Presso, Vitara Brezza, Swift, Dzire, Ignis, and the Wagon R.

    CVT Technology

The setup for Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) has two pulleys with variable diameters that are connected to a belt or chain. This hydraulic setup is operated by the Transmission Electronic Controller Unit to achieve the desired multiple speed ratios. Owing to this, the flow of power from the engine to the wheels is continuous, and the change in speed is gradual and smooth.

Maruti Suzuki has optimized its CVT technology and engine performance in line with Indian driving conditions and currently offers it in its premium hatchback, Baleno.

    AT Technology

This automatic transmission technology has three major components - torque converter (hydraulic coupling), planetary gear system, and hydraulic controls.

    • Torque Converter - It is a hydraulic coupling that transfers power from engine to transmission
    • Planetary Gear System - This system helps achieve vehicle speed variation for different driving requirements
    • Hydraulic Controls - This manages the operation of the wet clutches

This whole setup is controlled by a Transmission Electronic Controller Unit. It operates the hydraulic system which, in turn, operates the combination of the torque converter and wet clutches.

This automatic transmission delivers great driving performance and also comes with Hill Assist that helps while driving on inclines.

Advantages of Owning an Automatic Transmission car

AGS, CVT or AT; no matter which automatic transmission you opt for, you will benefit from advantages like ease of driving, great performance and driveability, and strong fuel economy. Maruti Suzuki offers these three transmission options across its range of models. That means you have several options at hand to make a choice from.
