Highlights
- The new generation BMW X4 gets the coupe-styled roofline & more features
- The 2019 BMW X4 does not have direct rival yet
- The new BMW X4 is expected to arrive in India in the second half of 2018
BMW has released the images of the second generation X4 coupe-styled SUV ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The all-new 2018 BMW X4 continues to retain the distinctive coupe-like roofline but has also matured in design borrowing cues from the new generation X3, the model on which it is based on. The first generation BMW X4 which arrived in 2014 never made it to India, but the new generation model is expected to be introduced in the country later in the year. The X4 won't have a direct rival in the Indian market when it does make it here; instead, it will compete against the Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC in the segment.

The new 2019 BMW X4 gets major upgrades over its predecessor including the all-new CLAR platform from BMW. The new architecture that was introduced with the 7 Series, is now seen on most new BMW models and has resulted in weight savings of nearly 50 kg. This, despite the fact that the new X4 is 81 mm longer and 37 mm wider than the previous version, while the wheelbase stands longer too by 54 mm, at 2864 mm. There's also 27 mm of additional legroom at the rear and the boot capacity has increased by 25 litres to 525 litres. The new BMW X4 also comes with 40/20/40 split rear seats, which can be folded to increase cargo capacity to 1430 litres.

In terms of aesthetic changes, the new generation BMW X4 gets a more upright front with massive kidnew grille, new headlamp cluster and new alloy wheels. The rear looks more seamlessly integrated, while the wraparound taillights are reminiscent of the upcoming 8 Series. The new X4 continues to get 50:50 weight distribution, which is expected to make it more engaging to drive. The new X4 also sports a drag coefficient of just 0.30.
Inside, BMW has introduced its new design language on the 2019 X4 and the model looks a lot more sporty and luxurious. Big changes include the new 6.5-inch display that comes as standard for the infotainment system or the optional 10.3-inch unit. The steering wheel is new shared with the new X3, 5 Series and 7 Series, while there are plenty of additional storage options across the cabin. You also get voice and gesture control, as well as paddle shifts on the higher spec trims. The coupe-styled SUV can be had in either 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, while BMW has made the M Sport suspension and speed-sensitive electro-mechanical Servotronic steering as standard on all trims.

Under the hood, engine options on the new BMW X4 will include a 2.0-litre petrol tuned for 181 bhp and 248 bhp, while there will also be a 2.0-litre diesel with 187 bhp and 228 bhp on offer. There will also be a 3.0-litre petrol version with 355 bhp on tap, while the 3.0-litre in-line-six diesel will be available with 321 bhp. Transmission duties will be handled by the 8-speed automatic for all engines, while BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system will also be on offer.

However, expect the X4 to share engines with the X3 when it comes to India. This means the 252hp, xDrive30i four-cylinder petrol, the 190hp, xDrive20d four-cylinder diesel and the 265hp, xDrive30d six-cylinder diesel are expected. There is no word on if and when the petrol models will arrive. All engines will be mated to a standard eight-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels via BMW's xDrive system. The X4 is capable of mild off-roading as well with a ground clearance of 204 mm, and features like Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist as standard.
