2017 MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid Teased

We'll finally see a Mini get a plug-in hybrid variant and this one is going to be based on the forthcoming second-generation Countryman. It's likely to carry the 'E' suffix and hence it might be called the Countryman E. There aren't many details out yet, but the folks at Mini say that the combustion engine will drive the front wheels while the electric motor will power the rear axle to provide the car with an all-wheel drive layout.

The Countryman will always start in electric mode and is going to reach speeds of up to 125Km/h without using any fuel at all. The plug-in hybrid version of the Countryman might share the same hardware as the BMW 225xe and hence might be quite the pocket rocket.

Mini Starts Testing The Countryman Plug-in Hybrid

We say this because the 225xe uses a 1.5-litre, 3 cylinder petrol engine which works together to give a combined output of 224bhp, while the torque figure stands at 385Nm. The 7.7-kWh battery pack which the 225xe gets gives it a range of 41km and that's quite good too. Mini has not let on any of these developments and we'll need to wait to know more.

On the design front, the plug-in hybrid Countryman looks similar to the other versions of the range, with the exception of the additional cap mounted on the front-left fender. From what we noticed in a few of these pictures which have been officially put out by Mini that the interior of the plug-in hybrid version will be quite different and we'll see some minor changes on this front like the rev counter being replaced by a power display

Mini Countryman Plug-in Hybrid Cabin

For those wondering if this is the first electrified model from the Mini stable, well you're wrong and you've probably forgotten the Mini E which was part of project BMW i. Its last phase of development actually saw the birth of the BMW i3 and there were 500 units built and offered with a one-year lease to select private and corporate customers. Clearly the plug-in hybrid version takes some notes from here too but we wait for Mini to tell us more.
