The 2016 Volvo S90 has been quite the highly awaited offering from the automaker, which has finally gone on sale in India with prices starting at Rs. 53.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Swedish carmaker's flagship sedan in India competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF, and while Volvo has been late to the party, the S90 we drove recently turns out to be a promising model that now comes with a competitive price tag.

Based on Volvo's SPA platform, the S90 shares its underpinnings with the XC90 SUV, and uses a transverse front-drive design architecture and a Multilink rear suspension layout. The S90 replaces the S80 sedan in Volvo's line-up and is a major departure over the model. In fact, the Geely-owned carmaker has certainly done it homework with the sedan being the longest in its segment measuring 4963mm.

With respect to styling, the 2016 Volvo S90 gets the brand's bold new design language that debuted on the XC90. The massive grille takes prominence at the front and is complemented by the Thor's Hammer LED DRLs. You also get just the right use of chrome across the exterior along with a sharp looking bumper with horizontal LED fog lamps. The sharp lines extend to the side profile of the car, revealing the long wheelbase, while the rear gets C-shaped tail lamps that are quintessentially Volvo and merge well with the sculpted boot-lid.

Inside, the new Volvo S90 boasts of an airy cabin with a good use of beige, brown and wood thrown in good measure. Quality is top notch and the same extends to the feature list that includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation; Apple CarPlay compatibility, 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, Heads Up Display (HUD) unit, Nappa leather upholstered seats with ventilation for front row; electrically adjustable seat extenders, 1400 watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system, climate control and much more.

The car comes with three driving modes - Eco, Comfort and Sport and gets an independent air-suspension on rear wheels. Being a Volvo, safety remains of paramount importance and the S90 comes equipped with the City Safety package featuring Lane Keeping Aid, Run off-road protection, whiplash protection, side impact protection and much more.

Power is offered from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine in the single D4 trim and churns out 190bhp and 400Nm of torque. The motor is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Part of Volvo Drive-E family of engines, the company says the oil burner is Euro 6 compliant, which make for lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency figures.

Much like Volvo's complete line-up, the S90 is also being brought in as a CBU in the country with deliveries set to commence in December this year. The automaker has also conveyed will be introducing a more powerful variant on the sedan next year in the D5 trim, which will use the same 2.0-litre diesel engine, albeit tweaked to produce 235bhp and 480Nm of torque. Sadly for petrol heads, Volvo has no plans to introduce the petrol derivative of the S90 anytime soon.
