Expert Review on Mahindra Thar
Pros
- The Thar offers strong off-road capabilities with a 4x4 drivetrain, 226 mm ground clearance, and water-wading capacity of 650 mm, making it a serious off-roader.
- Both petrol (150 bhp) and diesel (130 bhp) engines provide solid performance with good low-end torque, especially in the mStallion petrol variant, which feels responsive and refined.
- The interior has been modernized with features like a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and improved materials, making it more appealing for urban buyers.
Cons
- Rear seat space is limited, with the back seat best suited for kids, especially on long drives.
- The braking system could be sharper, particularly in wet conditions, as the bite is not as precise as expected.
- Lack of advanced safety features like a reverse camera and the absence of a hard-folding rear seat limit practicality in certain areas.
The Mahindra Thar is a major step up from its predecessor, offering a great blend of off-road capability, modern amenities, and a more refined driving experience. While rear space and braking performance could be improved, the Thar excels as a rugged, fun-to-drive SUV, particularly for those who value adventure and outdoor capability. It’s a compelling choice for off-road enthusiasts and urban dwellers alike, especially with its competitive pricing.
The Mahindra Thar has long been an iconic SUV in the Indian market, particularly favored for its off-road capabilities and rugged design. With the second-generation Thar, Mahindra has enhanced the vehicle to appeal to both urban and off-road enthusiasts. The new Thar is more refined, offers better safety features, and integrates advanced technology while staying true to its core identity of being a tough, go-anywhere SUV. The introduction of both mStallion petrol automatic and mHawk diesel manual versions gives buyers options tailored to different driving preferences.
The Mahindra Thar retains its recognizable boxy silhouette, reminiscent of its predecessor, but it also brings significant improvements in design. The rugged exterior is complemented by several modern touches, such as LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on the fenders, giving it a more urban lifestyle look.
However, it stays true to its off-road DNA with exposed door hinges, large chunky bumpers, and rugged 18-inch wheels on the LX variants, while the AX models come with 16-inch wheels.
The front grille, however, has caused some controversy among enthusiasts. Mahindra moved away from the seven-slot grille seen on earlier models due to legal reasons, opting for a new checkered pattern. While not universally loved, the grille does give the Thar a more distinct identity.
Other design elements, such as the raised hood, split tailgate, and plastic fenders, enhance its off-road credentials while keeping the vehicle in line with modern SUV aesthetics
The Thar comes with two engine options. The 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine produces 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, delivering strong low-end performance ideal for off-roading. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly and complements the diesel engine's torquey nature(Mahindra Thar).
The second engine option is the 2.0-liter mStallion petrol engine, which generates 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque, making it more powerful than the diesel variant.
This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth and quick gear shifts, offering a refined driving experience.
Both engines provide impressive off-road capabilities while being perfectly usable for daily driving in city conditions.
One of the significant improvements in the new Thar is its ride and handling. The suspension setup, while still stiff to ensure off-road capability, offers a much more comfortable ride than the previous model. The independent front and multi-link rear suspension system absorbs road imperfections effectively, and the Thar feels planted both on and off the road.
The Thar’s short wheelbase and stiff chassis improve its handling on winding roads. Though there is some body roll, especially around tight corners, it’s well-controlled for an SUV designed primarily for off-road driving. Off the beaten path, the Thar excels, thanks to its 4x4 drivetrain, mechanical rear differential lock, and high ground clearance of 226 mm. The SUV’s approach, departure, and ramp-over angles are also improved, ensuring it can tackle rough terrains with ease.
The Mahindra Thar now offers a much more comfortable interior, particularly in the LX lifestyle variants. The front seats are well-cushioned and ergonomically designed, with lumbar support to make long drives more comfortable. The LX variant also offers front-facing rear seats, which are a significant improvement over the side-facing benches of the previous generation.
However, space in the rear seats is limited, making them better suited for children or shorter adults, especially during longer trips. The access to the rear seats is via the front passenger side, where a handle allows the front seat to slide forward, which can be cumbersome for frequent use. Additionally, the boot space is limited, but folding down the 50:50 split rear seats creates extra room for luggage
Mahindra has equipped the new Thar with modern technology, making it a more appealing daily driver. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless smartphone connectivity.
Additionally, the system offers real-time adventure readouts, which display lateral and longitudinal angles, engine output, and more—ideal for off-road enthusiasts.
The inclusion of steering-mounted controls, cruise control, and a rear windscreen defogger adds convenience for city driving, and the dual airbags, ABS, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) contribute to improved safety. One downside is the lack of a reverse camera, which is becoming a standard feature in most modern SUVs, especially considering the Thar’s large dimensions and limited rear visibility.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the Mahindra Thar diesel manual delivers around 15-16 km/l, while the petrol automatic variant offers a slightly lower mileage of 12-14 km/l, depending on driving conditions. These figures are respectable for an SUV with such strong off-road capabilities.
The Mahindra Thar’s diesel engine produces 300 Nm of torque between 1600-2800 rpm, making it excellent for low-end torque delivery, ideal for off-road conditions and reducing the need for frequent gear changes. The petrol engine, with 320 Nm of torque available from 1500 rpm, offers a more spirited drive and is particularly well-suited for those who prefer automatic transmissions.
The Mahindra Thar offers a top speed of around 150 km/h for both the petrol and diesel variants. While this isn’t as fast as some modern SUVs, it is more than adequate for the Thar’s intended purpose of combining urban commutes with off-road adventures.
The interior of the Mahindra Thar is a significant step up from its predecessor, both in terms of quality and design. The materials used inside feel more premium, with washable upholstery on the seats to suit its outdoor lifestyle image. The dash design is modern, with well-placed controls and a digital instrument cluster that displays essential trip and vehicle information.
The steering wheel is now correctly aligned, addressing one of the ergonomic issues of the previous model, and the air conditioning system is strong, although a bit noisy even at lower fan speeds. There is a good blend of practicality and comfort, although the rear seats and boot space are compromised, making the Thar less ideal for long family trips.
The Mahindra Thar is priced between ₹11.25 lakh and ₹17.60 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most affordable off-road-capable SUVs in the Indian market. For buyers looking for a rugged SUV that can handle tough terrains and serve as a daily driver, the Thar offers excellent value for money, particularly in the LX variants.
Mahindra has an extensive service network across India, which ensures that after-sales service for the Thar is convenient and reliable. Mahindra’s service packages and warranties further add to the Thar’s value proposition, keeping maintenance costs reasonable compared to other off-road vehicles.
The Mahindra Thar competes with the Force Gurkha and, to a lesser extent, more urban-focused SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While the Thar lacks the road manners and interior space of these more mainstream SUVs, its unmatched off-road capabilities and rugged appeal set it apart, making it a favorite for those who enjoy outdoor adventures.
The Mahindra Thar is an excellent option for buyers seeking a versatile SUV that excels in off-road conditions while also being refined enough for daily use. Its combination of powerful engines, modern tech, and improved comfort makes it a compelling choice in its price range. While the Thar has its flaws, particularly in terms of rear seat comfort and boot space, it remains an iconic vehicle that offers tremendous value for its unique blend of off-road prowess and urban usability.
This review captures the essence of the Mahindra Thar and its appeal to both off-road enthusiasts and urban dwellers seeking adventure.

The Thar is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its robust suspension and solid engine performance. While the ground clearance is ideal for tough terrains, daily city driving can be less comfortable. The manual transmission is smooth, but fuel efficiency is moderate.

Mahindra Thar’s rugged style and high ground clearance make it a great choice for off-road adventures. However, its suspension feels a bit stiff on city roads. The engine delivers strong performance, but fuel efficiency isn’t its strongest suit. Ample boot space for luggage is a plus
