Verdict

Compared to its rivals the Amaze still comes at a premium which in a price sensitive segment is not ideal. Overall though a well-proportioned car has become better with a more likeable exterior and a cabin that feels more premium. It has managed to create a space of its own in this competitive segment

Honda Amaze Facelift Review:

The Honda Amaze facelift has arrived as a refreshed version of the second-generation subcompact sedan that originally hit the market in 2018. Notably, the Amaze has been a massive success for Honda in India, with over 4.5 lakh units sold to date. This facelift brings with it several cosmetic improvements both inside and out, while the core engine options and driving dynamics remain consistent.

The Amaze facelift showcases a more refined and improved exterior compared to its predecessor. Upfront, a redesigned grille, featuring two horizontal slats, complements the LED projector headlamps that incorporate daytime running lights (DRLs). The LED fog lamps, with their chrome accents, further enhance the visual appeal of the front fascia. On the sides, the introduction of dual-tone 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, along with chrome door handles (exclusively available on the VX trim), adds a touch of sophistication. Moving to the rear, the car boasts new C-shaped LED tail lamps and a chrome strip on the bumper. Buyers can choose from five exterior colors, including the new Meteoroid Grey.

Inside the cabin, the Amaze facelift takes strides in delivering a more premium feel. Notable enhancements include silver garnish accents on the steering wheel and dashboard, an updated stitching pattern on the upholstery, and a leather boot for the gear lever. New front map lamps contribute to added convenience. The car still provides an extensive array of features inherited from its previous iteration. These encompass a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that offers compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This system is accompanied by an analog instrument cluster that incorporates a multi-information display. Furthermore, the car comes with conveniences like automatic climate control, push-button start, a rearview camera, and voice command capabilities, among other amenities. However, it's worth mentioning that some expected features for this category, like connected car technology, rear AC vents, adjustable rear headrests, and cruise control for the CVT versions, are regrettably missing.

This subcompact sedan car gets standard safety features such as dual airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake distribution, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors, and impact-sensing door unlock. It's important to highlight that the vehicle does not include advanced driver assistance systems such as lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, or autonomous emergency braking. It's also noteworthy that the updated car has not undergone evaluation by Global NCAP for safety ratings. However, it's worth acknowledging that its predecessor achieved an admirable four out of five stars in a safety assessment conducted in 2019.

In the Amaze facelift, you'll find the same engine options as before. While available with a 1.2-liter petrol and a larger 1.5-liter diesel engine at the time of its launch, the latter has now been dropped from Honda’s line-up. You can choose either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic for the petrol engine. The petrol engine delivers a decent 89 bhp and 110 Nm of torque, providing reliable performance and provides a balanced performance characterised by good levels of refinement and impressive fuel efficiency. It achieves 18.6 kmpl with the manual transmission and 18.3 kmpl with the CVT. Notably, the CVT variant offers enhanced driving engagement through the inclusion of paddle shifters.

This subcompact sedan offers a harmonious blend of ride comfort and handling characteristics that make it well-suited for both urban and highway driving scenarios. The suspension system has been thoughtfully tuned to absorb road imperfections without compromising stability or agility. The steering is light and precise, facilitating ease of maneuvering in congested traffic conditions and tight spaces. Brakes are effective and provide reassuring feedback. The vehicle also exhibits commendable high-speed stability and cornering performance.

With a price range spanning from Rs. 7.10 lakh to Rs. 9.86 lakh (ex-showroom), the Amaze facelift accommodates a diverse range of budgets and preferences.. The vehicle is available across four trim levels: E, S, VX and the special edition VX Elite.

The choice of the most suitable variant depends on individual budgets and preferences. However, we recommend considering the VX trim, which packs in all the comfort and conveneinve features. The VX trim encompasses a notable array of features, including LED headlamps, fog lamps, alloy wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, push-button start, rearview camera, and voice command functionality. Importantly, it provides both manual and CVT transmission options for both petrol and diesel engines.

In the highly competitive subcompact sedan segment, the Amaze facelift faces contenders like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Hyundai Aura. Both models offer comparable features and performance while being priced similarly and are available with petrol engine options. Nevertheless, the Amaze facelift retains its competitive edge with its spacious cabin, generous boot space, unique diesel CVT option, and the inherent brand value synonymous with Honda.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

View All Amaze FAQs
  • The ability of the Honda Amaze to climb hills is a topic of interest for those considering this compact sedan for their driving needs, especially in regions characterized by hilly terrain. The Amaze, like many vehicles in its class, is equipped with an engine that offers a balance between power and efficiency, but certain factors must be taken into account when it comes to hill climbing.

One critical aspect is the torque output of the Amaze's engine. Torque is the force that enables a vehicle to overcome resistance and ascend inclines. While the Amaze's torque may be suitable for moderate hill climbs, it may encounter challenges on steep and prolonged slopes. The vehicle's performance on hills largely depends on the specific gradient of the terrain and the weight it is carrying, including passengers and cargo.

One of the key considerations for hill climbing in the Amaze is the choice of gear. The third and fourth gears may not provide the strong acceleration typically needed for overtaking on a hill or ascending steep slopes. This can make hill driving feel less powerful and might require a more strategic and patient approach, especially when restarting the car on an incline.

  • The horsepower and torque of the Honda Amaze engine depend on the specific model and variant. However, the base model Honda Amaze comes with a 1.2L i-VTEC petrol engine that produces 90 PS of power and 110 Nm of torque. There is also a 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine option that produces 100 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque.
  • The Honda Amaze offers prospective buyers the flexibility to choose between two transmission options, catering to different driving preferences and needs. For those seeking convenience and a hassle-free driving experience, the automatic transmission variant of the Honda Amaze is equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This advanced transmission technology ensures that gear changes are incredibly smooth, resulting in a seamless and comfortable ride, particularly in congested city traffic or during highway cruising. On the other hand, individuals who relish the control and engagement of a manual gearbox will appreciate the 5-speed manual transmission option. This traditional manual transmission provides a more hands-on driving experience, allowing drivers to actively manage gear changes and have a deeper connection with the vehicle. In summary, whether you prioritize ease of use and comfort or prefer the involvement of manual shifting, the Honda Amaze accommodates both preferences with its automatic and manual transmission choices, ensuring a satisfying driving experience tailored to your style and requirements.
  • The Honda Amaze, known for its overall driving comfort and performance, also excels in providing a relatively quiet cabin experience, a key factor for many drivers and passengers. When the windows are fully closed and the air conditioning is running, the Amaze effectively minimizes external noise, creating a calm and peaceful interior environment. This sound insulation is particularly appreciated in urban settings, where external noises such as traffic, honking, and city bustle can be distracting and stressful.

However, it is important to note that like many vehicles, the Honda Amaze is not completely impervious to external sounds. There are occasions, especially on certain types of road surfaces, where the sound of the wheels can penetrate the cabin. While this is not overly intrusive, it is noticeable compared to the otherwise quiet interior. This wheel noise is often more evident at higher speeds or on rough and uneven roads.

The spacious cabin of the Amaze plays a role in enhancing the overall comfort of the ride. The car's design ensures that passengers have ample space, contributing to a relaxed and comfortable journey. Additionally, the suspension system of the Amaze deserves special mention. It is engineered to absorb road imperfections effectively, ensuring that bumps or rough surfaces are smoothed out. This results in a ride that is free from jarring movements and body rolls, even at higher speeds. Such stability is not only a comfort factor but also contributes to the feeling of safety and control.

In terms of interior design and build quality, the Honda Amaze utilizes materials and construction techniques that aid in reducing cabin noise. From the design of the door seals to the insulation materials used in the car's body, various elements work together to keep the interior quiet.

  • The Honda Amaze is indeed designed to comfortably accommodate five people, making it an ideal choice for families or small groups. Its dimensions, which include a length of 3995 mm and a width of 1695 mm, contribute to a spacious interior, providing enough room for all occupants. This space is not just limited to seating areas but extends to ample legroom and headroom, ensuring comfort during longer journeys.

The car’s wheelbase, measuring 2470 mm, is a significant factor in this spaciousness. A longer wheelbase typically results in more interior space, particularly affecting legroom for both front and rear passengers. In the Amaze, this extended wheelbase is effectively utilized to maximize the available space, helping to avoid a cramped interior.

Seat design and cabin layout are also crucial in ensuring comfort for all five occupants. The seats in the Amaze are designed for support and comfort, even over long durations. The rear bench, meant to accommodate three passengers, is thoughtfully designed with adequate shoulder and hip room, crucial in preventing a cramped feeling, especially when the car is at full capacity.

Beyond just space, the Honda Amaze includes features that contribute to overall passenger comfort. These features likely include efficient air conditioning vents, strategically placed for effective cooling or heating, practical storage solutions for personal items, and ergonomic elements that enhance the overall experience for both the driver and passengers. These considerations demonstrate Honda's commitment to providing a comfortable and convenient driving experience in the Amaze.

  • The Honda Amaze stands out as an excellent choice for long drives, attributing to its combination of comfort, safety features, and driver-friendly technologies. This entry-level sedan is designed with elements that cater specifically to the needs of drivers and passengers embarking on extended journeys.

One of the primary aspects that make the Honda Amaze suitable for long drives is its impressive suspension system. The vehicle's suspension is adept at absorbing bumps and irregularities on the road, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. This ability to effectively soak up road imperfections is crucial for long-distance travel, as it reduces the fatigue associated with driving on less-than-ideal road surfaces. Another significant feature contributing to the Amaze's suitability for long drives is its sound insulation. Good sound insulation enhances the cabin's tranquility, minimizing the intrusion of external noise such as traffic, wind, and engine sounds. This creates a more relaxed and quiet environment inside the vehicle, which is particularly appreciated during lengthy trips. The interior space and seating comfort of the Honda Amaze also play a vital role in its long-drive capabilities. The car offers excellent legroom, which is a key factor for comfort, especially on longer journeys where passengers may spend extended periods in the car. Additionally, the seats in the Amaze are designed to provide superior support. They include adjustable head restraints, ensuring that both the driver and passengers can find a comfortable seating position, thereby reducing the strain on the back and neck during long drives. Moreover, the Honda Amaze is equipped with a range of comfort features that enhance the driving experience on highways. The 7-inch infotainment system is a noteworthy inclusion, offering entertainment and connectivity options that can make long drives more enjoyable and less monotonous. This system may include navigation, audio streaming, and connectivity with smartphones, allowing drivers and passengers to stay connected and entertained. Furthermore, the cruise control system in the Honda Amaze is a valuable feature for highway driving. It allows the driver to maintain a constant speed without continuously pressing the accelerator, reducing driver fatigue and contributing to a more relaxed driving experience. Cruise control is particularly beneficial on long stretches of road where constant speed is desirable.

  • The safety features and ratings of the Honda Amaze indeed contribute significantly to its reputation as a safe car. The vehicle's 4-star rating from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is a notable achievement, underscoring its robust safety standards. ASEAN NCAP is a recognized authority in vehicle safety assessments in Southeast Asia, and a 4-star rating from this body indicates a high level of safety for the occupants.

Key to the Honda Amaze's safety arsenal is the dual airbags – one for the driver and another for the front passenger. Airbags are critical in mitigating injuries during accidents, rapidly deploying in the event of a collision to cushion the occupants from the impact.

Beyond airbags, the Honda Amaze offers several other safety features. A seat belt warning reminds passengers to buckle up, a fundamental safety practice. Over-speed warning is another beneficial feature, alerting the driver when the vehicle exceeds certain speed limits, thereby promoting safer driving habits.

For families, particularly those with young children, the inclusion of child lock and anchor points for child seats is reassuring. Child locks prevent accidental door opening from the inside, and anchor points ensure that child seats are securely attached, providing additional protection for younger passengers

The vehicle also includes a door lock feature activated by speed sensors, enhancing safety by automatically locking doors at certain speeds. Central locking is another convenient feature that enhances security. The anti-theft engine immobilizer adds an extra layer of security, preventing the engine from starting without the correct key, thus deterring vehicle theft.

  • The Honda Amaze, a popular compact sedan , offers different features across its various variants, and the availability of power-folding side mirrors is dependent on the specific model of the vehicle. This feature, while not universal across all variants, is included in some of the higher-end models of the Amaze.

Power-folding side mirrors are a convenient feature, especially in urban environments where parking spaces are often tight. With the touch of a button, these mirrors automatically fold in, making the car more compact and reducing the risk of the mirrors being accidentally hit or damaged by passing vehicles or pedestrians. This functionality is particularly useful when parking in narrow streets or crowded parking lots.

In contrast, the lower-end variants of the Honda Amaze might be equipped with manual side mirrors. These require physical adjustment by hand, a common feature in more budget-friendly or base models of many vehicles. While manual mirrors lack the convenience of their power-folding counterparts, they are still fully functional and can be adjusted to provide the driver with an adequate view of the vehicle's rear and sides.

The inclusion of power-folding side mirrors in some variants of the Honda Amaze aligns with the trend of incorporating advanced technological features in modern cars for enhanced convenience and safety. For potential buyers, the choice between power-folding and manual side mirrors will likely depend on their budget and preference for convenience features.
