car&bike Expert Take
“The BYD Seal delivers on all fronts with design, performance, features, and pricing. It suits buyers looking for a premium electric sedan that feels fast, modern, and well-equipped. However, it may not be ideal for those prioritising rear seat comfort, higher ground clearance, or a more conventional user interface.”

Introduced at a time when EVs are no longer seen as a compromise, the BYD Seal positions itself as a serious alternative in the premium electric sedan space. The Seal is offered with battery options ranging from 61.44 kWh to 82.56 kWh, delivering performance figures going up to 523 bhp.
We evaluated the Seal across city and highway conditions, and what stands out immediately is how refined and effortless it feels to drive. The cabin is spacious despite the sporty design, and the extensive features it comes with add to everyday usability. However, we also found that relying heavily on the touchscreen for basic controls could feel distracting on the move.

This BYD Seal expert review features inputs from auto journalist Kingshuk Dutta, who evaluated its design, performance, ride quality, and practicality in detail within his written review. His observations have been included here to present a clear and balanced understanding of what the Seal offers as a complete package.
The BYD Seal is offered with multiple battery and motor configurations, and we found that each variant delivers strong performance without compromising everyday usability. The base variant focuses on efficiency, while the higher variants bring noticeably quicker acceleration and more power.

Powertrain Specifications Tested
The following table lists the key specifications of the BYD Seal:
| Battery Pack | Power | Torque | Drivetrain |
| 61.44 kWh / 82.56 kWh | 201 – 523 bhp | 310 – 670 Nm | RWD / AWD |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In city conditions, we found the BYD Seal smooth and easy to drive. The instant power delivery makes it quick in traffic, and the throttle response feels predictable. Regenerative braking can be adjusted, and in its higher setting, it reduces the need for constant braking in stop-and-go situations.
As Kingshuk Dutta notes,
“The moment you press the accelerator, the instant power delivery reminds you why EVs feel so addictive.”
Highway Driving
On the highway, we found the Seal genuinely quick and very stable. Acceleration is strong across all variants, with the Premium variant reaching 0–100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. Even at higher speeds, the car feels planted and confident, making long-distance driving easy.
The BYD Seal doesn’t follow the typical EV design approach; it feels more like a premium sports sedan that just happens to be electric. It looks clean, low, and quite distinctive, especially compared to most EVs on the road today.

Here’s a quick look at the key design elements:
- Ocean-inspired design language gives it a unique identity
- Sleek fastback-style roofline adds a sporty, coupe-like stance
- Minimalistic surfaces with no unnecessary cuts or creases
- 19-inch alloy wheels and a low stance enhance its road presence
- ‘Glistening Ripple Lamps’ add a distinctive lighting signature
- Strong aerodynamic efficiency with a drag coefficient of 0.219 Cd
We found that the Seal stands out without trying too hard. It doesn’t look overly futuristic, but it also doesn’t blend in like a typical sedan. Overall, it feels premium, well-proportioned, and different in a good way.
| Dimension | BYD Seal | Volvo EX30 | BMW iX1 |
| Length | 4,800 mm | 4,233 mm | 4,500 mm |
| Width | 1,875 mm | 1,838 mm | 1,845 mm |
| Height | 1,460 mm | 1,550 mm | 1,612 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,920 mm | 2,650 mm | 2,692 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 145 mm | 171–177 mm | 170 mm |
| Curb Weight | 1,922 – 2,185 kg | 1,830 – 1,943 kg | 2,010 – 2,085 kg |
The Seal is the longest here with the biggest wheelbase (2,920 mm), giving it better road presence and interior space than its rivals. Its lower height adds a sportier stance, but the 145 mm ground clearance requires caution on speed breakers. Overall, it stands out as a true sedan in a segment dominated by SUV-style EVs.

The BYD Seal stands out with a design that feels both minimal and purposeful. Unlike many EVs that look overstyled, this one keeps things clean while still looking premium and sporty. We found that the low stance, smooth surfaces, and aerodynamic shape (0.219 Cd) all come together to give it a strong road presence without trying too hard.
As Kingshuk Dutta observes,
“Looks are subjective, but the BYD Seal might just be the best-looking car BYD has launched in India so far.”
Front Profile
The Seal’s fascia is defined by a sharp and clean design with sleek LED headlamps and unique lighting elements. The ‘Glistening Ripple Lamps’ stand out and give it a distinctive identity, something you don’t usually see on other EVs. We also noticed how the front stays uncluttered, which adds to the premium feel.
Side Profile
From the side, the Seal looks more like a fastback than a traditional sedan, thanks to its sloping roofline. Despite this coupe-like styling, it still maintains proper sedan proportions, which we found impressive. The 19-inch alloy wheels, low ground clearance, and smooth body lines add to its sporty stance.
Rear Profile
At the rear, the design continues to stay minimal yet sporty. The clean layout, combined with an aggressive rear diffuser, gives it a planted look. We found that the overall design doesn’t rely on excessive elements but still manages to stand out, especially with its wide stance and balanced proportions.
The cabin of the BYD Seal follows the same minimalist approach as its exterior, with a clean dashboard and a strong focus on screens. We found that while the design isn’t overly flashy, it feels modern and well put together.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The layout is simple and centred around a large rotating touchscreen that dominates the dashboard. The gear selector, with its crystal finish, stands out as a premium touch. The overall fit and finish is solid, and the cabin feels airy thanks to the fixed glass roof. However, most controls are integrated into the screen, which can feel slightly distracting to use while driving.

Seating Comfort
First Row
The front seats have a sporty bucket-style design, but they remain comfortable with good cushioning and support. We found that the powered seat adjustments and memory function make it easy to find a good driving position. Despite the low-slung design of the car, space in the front feels adequate and not restrictive.
Second Row
Rear seat space is good, with enough knee room and headroom for most passengers. The seat cushioning is comfortable, and the back support is well-shaped for regular use. However, we found that the elevated floor compromises under-thigh support, and the footroom feels slightly restricted. While it is a five-seater on paper, the rear is best suited for two passengers, especially on longer journeys.

BYD has kept things simple with the Seal by offering it in three clear variants. The lineup starts with the Dynamic Range variant and goes up to the Performance variant, which focuses on outright speed.

The Seal is positioned as a premium electric sedan, but what stood out to us is how aggressively it has been priced. It undercuts its closest rivals while still offering more power and features. We have listed the BYD Seal’s variant-wise pricing in India below.
BYD Seal Ex-Showroom Price in India
| Variant | Battery Pack | Power | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Dynamic Range | 61.44 kWh | 201.15 bhp | Rs. 41 Lakh |
| Premium Range | 82.56 kWh | 308.43 bhp | Rs. 45.70 Lakh |
| Performance | 82.56 kWh | 523 bhp | Rs. 53.15 Lakh |
For anyone considering a premium EV sedan, range is still one of the biggest deciding factors. The BYD Seal handles this well by offering strong claimed figures across all variants, and more importantly, numbers that feel realistic in everyday use.
Here’s what we found during our evaluation:
- The Seal offers a claimed range between 510 km and 650 km, depending on the variant.
- The Premium variant stands out as the sweet spot, balancing performance with the highest claimed range.
Observed Range Efficiency During Testing
| Variant | Claimed Range | Expected Real-World Range |
| Dynamic Range (61.44 kWh) | 510 km | 400–450 km |
| Premium Range (82.56 kWh) | 650 km | 520–580 km |
| Performance (82.56 kWh AWD) | 580 km | 480–520 km |
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The BYD Seal comes with nine airbags as standard, offering strong protection for both front and rear occupants. It also gets traction control, hill hold assist, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera. During our evaluation, the car felt stable and confidence-inspiring, especially at higher speeds, which adds to the overall sense of safety.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The Seal is equipped with a Level 2 ADAS suite that includes multiple driver assistance features aligned with global standards. While we didn’t get enough time to fully test these systems in all real-world scenarios, they do add an extra layer of safety and convenience.

Safety Verdict
The BYD Seal has received a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. With nine airbags, a comprehensive safety package, and advanced driver assistance systems, it comes across as a well-equipped and reassuring electric sedan for everyday as well as long-distance use.
The BYD Seal focuses on a clean, modern cabin while adding tech that feels advanced, but could need some getting used to in daily driving.
Infotainment and Interface
- The Seal uses a large 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen along with a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.
- The infotainment system is smooth and responsive, with sharp graphics and no noticeable lag.
- The interface feels closer to using a tablet, which makes it intuitive, but also means most controls are screen-based.
- AC functions are integrated into the display, and while they are always accessible, relying on touch inputs can be distracting on the move.
- Under bright sunlight, the visibility of the screen can drop, which is something we noticed quickly.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- The Seal comes with features like ventilated and heated seats, an eight-way powered driver seat with memory, and a powered passenger seat.
- The panoramic glass roof adds to the sense of space, though the absence of a sunshade may not suit all conditions.
- The cabin is practical, with two wireless phone chargers, multiple Type-A and Type-C ports, and a heads-up display adding to convenience.
- The 12-speaker sound system delivers a rich listening experience, especially on longer drives.
- Storage is well thought out, with large bottle holders, usable centre console space, and additional storage under the floating console.

- The Seal offers a 400-litre boot, which is sufficient for weekend luggage of small to medium suitcases.
- The layout is usable, though packing larger items will require some adjustment.
- The rear seats get a 60:40 split, allowing more flexibility when needed.
- There is also a 50-litre frunk at the front, which is useful for storing charging cables or smaller bags.
- The storage setup works well for everyday use, with enough flexibility for occasional longer trips.
The BYD Seal feels planted and confidence-inspiring at most speeds.
City Driving
In the city, the Seal feels easy to drive despite its size. We found the power delivery smooth and immediate, which makes quick gaps and overtakes effortless. The suspension absorbs small bumps well, keeping the cabin comfortable. Regenerative braking can be adjusted, and in its balanced setting, it feels natural for daily traffic conditions.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the Seal feels very stable and composed. We noticed that the low stance and balanced weight distribution help it stay planted, even at higher speeds. Acceleration is strong across variants, and overtakes happen quickly without much effort. Ride quality remains comfortable, though you need to slow down over sharp bumps or large speed breakers due to the low ground clearance.
The BYD Seal is offered in three variants, giving buyers a choice between range and performance. It is available in Dynamic, Premium, and Performance trims. Take a look at what each variant offers:
Variant | Battery & Power | Key Highlights | Best Suited For |
Dynamic Range | 61.44 kWh, 201 bhp | 510 km range, RWD setup, essential features | Buyers entering the premium EV space |
Premium Range | 82.56 kWh, 308 bhp | 650 km range, stronger performance, better balance | Buyers prioritising range and all-round usability |
Performance | 82.56 kWh, 523 bhp | AWD, 0–100 kmph in 3.8s, top performance | Buyers looking for maximum power and thrill |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No physical buttons or knobs for AC control
- No sunshade for the panoramic glass roof
- Low ground clearance can be a concern on bad roads
Choosing the right BYD Seal variant depends on how you plan to use the car, based on whether it’s mostly city driving, long highway trips, or if you want maximum performance and features.
Best for Daily City Use: Dynamic Range (61.44 kWh)
For everyday city driving, the Dynamic variant is more than sufficient. The 510 km claimed range is practical for daily use, and we found the performance (201 bhp) to be smooth and easy to manage in traffic.
Best for Long Drives: Premium Range (82.56 kWh)
For highway drives and longer trips, the Premium variant makes more sense. With a claimed range of up to 650 km, we found it better suited for covering longer distances with fewer charging stops. It also offers stronger performance, which helps during overtakes and highway cruising.
Best Performance Option: Performance (AWD)
If performance is your priority, the top-spec Performance variant stands out. With 523 bhp and a 0–100 kmph time of just 3.8 seconds, it is really quick and engaging to drive. The dual-motor AWD setup also adds more confidence, especially at higher speeds.
Best Value Overall: Premium Range
The Premium variant delivers the best balance. It offers the highest claimed range, strong performance, and all the essential features without reaching the top-end price. For most buyers, we found this to be the most well-rounded choice.
The BYD Seal goes up against premium electric cars like the Volvo EX30 and the BMW iX1. While the Seal focuses on a sporty sedan design, strong performance, and a long range, these rivals bring their own strengths in brand value, features, and driving experience.
We evaluated how the Seal compares with these rivals in terms of battery capacity, range, and performance to understand where it stands.
| Model | Battery Capacity | Range | Power Output | Ex-Showroom Price |
| BYD Seal | 61.44 - 82.56 kWh | 510 - 650 km | 201 - 523 bhp | Rs. 41 - 53.15 Lakh |
| Volvo EX30 | 69 kWh | 480 km | 272 bhp | Rs. 39.99 Lakh |
| BMW iX1 | 66.4 kWh | 531 km | 204 bhp | Rs. 50.90 Lakh |
Which Electric Sedan Should You Choose?
- Choose the BYD Seal if you want a premium electric sedan that offers stronger performance, more features, and better overall value.
- Choose the Volvo EX30 if you prefer a more compact luxury EV with a simpler feature set and a slightly lower entry price.
- Choose the BMW iX1 if you want the reassurance of a traditional luxury brand with a familiar driving experience.
Pros
- Sleek, minimalist design with strong road presence
- Premium cabin with soft-touch materials and quality elements
- Feature-rich package with a long equipment list
- Competitive pricing compared to similarly positioned EVs
Cons
- Low ground clearance requires caution
- Touchscreen-heavy controls can be distracting while driving
- Rear seat comfort is not ideal for three passengers
- Low-profile tyres are more prone to damage on rough roads
Verdict
The BYD Seal brings together design, performance, and features in a way that feels complete for a premium EV. It looks distinctive, drives smoothly, and delivers strong performance across its variants. During our evaluation, we found the acceleration to be quick and effortless, the ride quality comfortable over most surfaces, and the overall experience refined for both city and highway use.
There are a few compromises to be aware of. The low ground clearance needs careful driving over larger bumps, and the reliance on the touchscreen for key functions can take some getting used to. Rear seat comfort, while adequate, isn’t the best in class for longer journeys.

Kingshuk Dutta concludes,
“In many ways, the Seal lives up to its name, and it might just seal the deal for a lot of buyers.”
