Expert Review on Tata Punch
Pros
- Tata Punch is built on the ALFA platform, making it a robust and compact micro SUV with excellent ground clearance of 187 mm, perfect for rough terrains and urban roads alike.
- The 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine delivers 85 bhp and 113 Nm of torque, providing peppy performance for city commutes, especially with the light and easy-to-drive nature of the 5-speed manual and AMT versions.
- It has scored a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, making it one of the safest vehicles in its segment, with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard.
Cons
- The AMT gearbox shows hesitation during gear shifts, particularly from first to third, which can affect the smoothness of the drive.
- The rear seat comfort is compromised due to limited legroom, and while it's a compact SUV, the back row can feel tight for taller passengers.
- The infotainment screen is relatively small at 7 inches and could be more responsive, with noticeable lag during operation
Tata Punch is a strong contender in the micro SUV segment, offering a blend of SUV styling, solid safety credentials, and practical features at an affordable price point. While there are minor issues with the AMT gearbox and rear seat space, the overall value for money, robust build quality, and top-tier safety make it a great choice for urban families looking for a compact, safe, and stylish vehicle.
Tata Punch is Tata Motors’ venture into the burgeoning micro-SUV segment in India, which fills the gap between compact hatchbacks and full-fledged SUVs. It offers the rugged look of an SUV with the affordability and size of a hatchback. Tata has marketed the Punch as a vehicle designed for city driving but capable of handling rough roads due to its high ground clearance and sturdy build. Launched in 2021, the Punch directly competes with rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and the Renault Kwid.
The Punch is offered in four personas: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Creative, each catering to different customer needs. With features like dual airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and Tata’s 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, the Punch appeals to safety-conscious buyers.
Tata Punch sticks closely to the design language introduced by Tata’s HBX concept, which gives it a bold, muscular appearance. It shares visual cues with its larger SUV siblings, like the Harrier and Safari, creating a family resemblance.
Design Aspect | Details |
---|---|
Exterior Styling | Muscular, with pronounced wheel arches and bold front fascia |
Dimensions | 3827 mm (L) x 1742 mm (W) x 1615 mm (H), wheelbase: 2445 mm, ground clearance: 187 mm |
Key Features | H-shaped DRLs, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, tri-arrow grille design |
Roof Options | Dual-tone roof options for top variants, adding to its premium feel |
The Punch features a split headlamp design, with DRLs sitting above the main headlamp cluster. The rear features LED taillights, with Easter eggs like a Rhinoceros icon hidden in the rear windshield. The high ground clearance and squared wheel arches emphasize its SUV stance, while the 16-inch alloy wheels complete the rugged look.
Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine that prioritizes fuel efficiency and drivability over outright performance. The engine is mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox, catering to both enthusiasts and convenience seekers.
Engine | Details |
---|---|
Displacement | 1199 cc |
Max Power | 84 bhp @ 6000 rpm |
Max Torque | 113 Nm @ 3300 rpm |
Transmission | 5-speed Manual / 5-speed AMT |
Fuel Efficiency | Approx. 18-20 km/l combined (varies by variant) |
The Revotron engine features Tata’s Dynapro technology, improving low-end torque and power delivery. While the Punch isn’t the quickest in its class, it’s more than capable for city driving and occasional highway trips. The AMT gearbox shows some hesitation during gear shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd, but smoothens out at higher gears
Tata Punch offers a driving experience that feels composed and controlled, thanks to its higher ground clearance and compact dimensions. It balances the maneuverability of a hatchback with the ruggedness of an SUV.
Riding Aspect | Details |
---|---|
Suspension | Independent McPherson strut in front, twist-beam at the rear for improved comfort |
Ground Clearance | 187 mm, allowing for light off-roading and navigating city potholes effortlessly |
Off-road Capabilities | Despite lacking 4WD, the traction pro mode helps navigate low-traction surfaces |
Water Wading | Up to 365 mm, superior to many competitors |
Though the Punch lacks 4WD, its traction pro mode and high ground clearance make it suitable for light off-roading and rough city roads. Tata claims that it can handle inclines and muddy surfaces better than competitors like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis.
Inside the Tata Punch, the cabin is designed for practicality and comfort, especially for city drivers. The interiors are both functional and appealing, with premium features in the higher variants.
Comfort Feature | Details |
---|---|
Seating | Fabric upholstery with accents matching the exterior color in the top trims |
Infotainment System | 7-inch Harman Kardon touchscreen in higher variants, 4-inch display in lower trims |
AC Vents | Blue surrounds in Tornado Blue models, grey for others |
Smart Storage Spaces | 25 utility spaces, including umbrella nooks, bottle holders, and a cooled glove box in top trims |
The seats offer good under-thigh support, and the flat rear floor creates a feeling of more space. The rear legroom is ample for a car of this size, though taller passengers may feel a bit cramped on longer journeys. Tata’s decision to add features like rear AC vents and a cooled glove box makes it practical and comfortable for city commutes
Punch offers a good balance of technology at an affordable price, particularly in the Creative variant.
Tech Feature | Details |
---|---|
Infotainment System | 7-inch Harman Kardon touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in top variants |
Connectivity | IRA connected car tech in higher variants, telematics data integration |
Sound System | 6-speaker Harman Kardon system for immersive sound |
Other Features | Automatic climate control, reverse parking camera, and cruise control in higher variants |
The IRA connected tech allows for real-time vehicle monitoring and access to essential data. However, the touchscreen feels smaller than it is due to thick bezels, and its interface could use some refinement in terms of responsiveness
Tata Punch is designed to be fuel-efficient, making it an ideal choice for city driving and occasional highway trips.
Variant | Fuel Efficiency (Approx.) |
---|---|
Manual | 19-20 km/l (combined) |
AMT | 18-19 km/l (combined) |
Despite its SUV-inspired design, the Punch manages good fuel efficiency for a petrol-powered vehicle, with numbers that match its competitors
The Tata Punch is priced competitively, ranging from around ₹5.99 lakh to ₹9.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Given its safety features, practicality, and design, the Punch offers excellent value for money, especially in the higher variants.
When compared to rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Renault Kwid, the Tata Punch offers a more SUV-like experience with additional features, making it worth the extra investment
Tata Motors provides robust after-sale service across India, with a growing network of service centers. The Punch comes with a 2-year/75,000 km warranty, which can be extended for peace of mind. Tata’s reputation for solid build quality and safety adds to the appeal.
The Tata Punch competes with a range of micro-SUVs and hatchbacks in India. Key competitors include:
Competitor | Comparison |
---|---|
Maruti Suzuki Ignis | Lacks the rugged SUV look but offers slightly better mileage |
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios | More refined cabin but lacks the high ground clearance and SUV stance |
Renault Kwid | Cheaper, but smaller and less feature-rich |
While the Ignis and Kwid are more affordable, the Punch delivers a more premium feel with its SUV stance and better interior space, making it a top contender in this emerging segment
The Tata Punch offers a unique proposition as a micro-SUV, filling a gap between hatchbacks and compact SUVs. With its rugged design, practical features, and excellent safety ratings, it’s an ideal choice for buyers looking for something that offers the look and feel of an SUV without the hefty price tag. I own creative variant and been using since 7 months with 5000 kms drive. Mostly I do highway run and I am very satisfied with the mileage 18-19kmpl in highways and little disappointed in city.. I get 13kmpl in city. Initial pick up is slow due to 3 cylinder engine and at 2500 rpm it’s power is outrageous and you like to drive more in highways…. Cabin is spacious because I weight 102 kgs and still I feel very very comfortable in drivers seat… trust me… and it’s very stable at a speed of 80-100 Kmpl in highways… if it’s very hot outside then you may feel little hot in car till the cabin cools… due to the hot outside it takes little time to cool cabin… but in evening it cools in rapidly…

The Punch is going to be a great buy especially if used mostly in the urban jungle. I just hope they up their game on the engine too so overall these are a more complete package. It ticks a lot of boxes for the paying urban customer - looks that stand out from the crowd, classy interiors, new-age platform, tried and tested competent engine, and an automatic option. Not to mention, the feel-good factor which comes with a "SUV" purchase these days, however "mini" it might be.

Well-designed and practical cabin with enough space for 4 adults. Punch has sorted road manners. Straight line stability is satisfactory and the car doesnt feel nervous even at high speed kmh. Main deal breaker is that NA engine. The front design looks like a shrunk version of Harrier and I felt this could work against the premium Brand. Rest of the features are winwin

Sorted road manners and reassuring high speed stability. Enjoyable Harman Six speaker ICE, one of the better systems in this segment. A full Five stars in the GNCAP. But some missing goodies such as an auto-dimming IRVM, splitting rear seat, rear AC vents, full size spare.Nevertheless, Happy to see such impressive new cars from homegrown players .

- The Tata Punch is equipped with a 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine that delivers a maximum power of 85 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 3,300 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox. The engine is designed to deliver good performance as well as fuel efficiency.
The Tata Punch, a notable entrant in the compact suv segment is engineered with a focus on delivering a balanced driving experience. This vehicle comes standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This gearbox is designed to offer smooth and precise gear shifts, catering to drivers who enjoy a more engaged and interactive driving experience. The manual transmission in the Tata Punch is not just a functional aspect of the vehicle; it's a key component in delivering a driving experience that feels connected and responsive. The tactile feedback and control offered by the manual gearbox are aspects that enthusiasts often appreciate, as it allows for a more involved and dynamic interaction with the vehicle.
In addition to the manual option, the Tata Punch also offers a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) as an alternative. This gearbox is aimed at buyers who prioritize convenience and ease of use, particularly in urban driving conditions where frequent stop-and-go traffic can make a manual transmission less appealing. The AMT in the Tata Punch is designed to provide smooth gear shifts, contributing to a more relaxed and less strenuous driving experience. This type of gearbox combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, giving drivers the best of both worlds.
The inclusion of both transmission types in the Tata Punch lineup underscores Tata Motors' commitment to catering to a diverse range of customer preferences. Whether it’s the engaging manual gearbox for those who love driving or the convenient AMT for those who seek ease and comfort, the Tata Punch is equipped to deliver. This versatility in transmission choice is a thoughtful consideration by Tata Motors, ensuring that different driving styles and needs are accommodated. Moreover, the choice of transmission has implications for fuel efficiency and performance, with each type offering distinct advantages. The manual gearbox typically provides a more direct connection between the driver and the vehicle, potentially leading to better control over fuel consumption and power delivery. On the other hand, the AMT offers a more effortless driving experience, especially in traffic-laden city conditions.
The heart of the Tata Punch is its robust 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine, a powerplant that exemplifies a harmonious blend of performance and efficiency. This impressive engine is capable of generating a maximum power output of 86 PS at 6,000 rpm, ensuring that the Punch delivers a spirited and responsive drive. Additionally, it produces a peak torque of 113 Nm at 3,300 rpm, providing ample low-end torque for smooth acceleration and effortless city driving.
What sets the Tata Punch's engine apart is its well-calibrated tuning, which strikes an optimal balance between power and fuel efficiency . This design philosophy is particularly advantageous for drivers, as it means that the Punch offers lively performance when needed while maintaining commendable fuel economy. This dual advantage is especially appreciated in diverse driving scenarios, whether you're navigating city streets or embarking on longer highway journeys.
Furthermore, the engine's refined engineering contributes to reduced emissions and a more environmentally conscious driving experience. It aligns with modern standards for cleaner and more efficient combustion, making the Tata Punch an eco-friendly choice in addition to its dynamic performance attributes.
The type of seats equipped in the Tata Punch is an essential aspect of the car's interior comfort and driving experience. It can be confirmed that the Tata Punch features fabric seats, a choice that prioritizes both comfort and durability.
The fabric seats in the Tata Punch are carefully designed to ensure a pleasant and ergonomic seating experience. They are known for their comfort, which is a crucial factor for drivers and passengers, particularly during long journeys. These seats provide excellent support, which is vital to reduce fatigue and discomfort on extended drives.
The choice of fabric seats aligns with the Tata Punch's commitment to delivering a comfortable and user-friendly interior. Fabric seats are known for their durability and ability to withstand regular use without showing signs of wear and tear quickly. This durability ensures that the seats retain their comfort and appearance over time, contributing to the car's overall value and longevity.
The legroom for rear passengers in the Tata Punch is a notable aspect of its interior design and contributes to the overall comfort of the vehicle. Despite the compact size of the car, Tata Motors has ensured that rear passengers have adequate legroom to sit comfortably during journeys. The rear seats are thoughtfully positioned to provide ample space for passengers, and this design consideration becomes particularly evident when tall passengers occupy the back seat.
One of the key objectives in designing the Tata Punch's interior was to maximize space utilization, and this is evident in the generous legroom offered to rear passengers. Whether it's for daily commutes or longer road trips, the Tata Punch ensures that passengers in the rear seats do not feel cramped or uncomfortable. This feature is especially important for the overall passenger experience, as it allows individuals of various heights to travel without any discomfort.
Moreover, the attention to detail in providing good legroom for rear passengers aligns with modern automotive standards, where comfort and convenience play a significant role in the selection of a vehicle. Tata Motors has successfully struck a balance between compact car dimensions and interior spaciousness, making the Tata Punch a practical and comfortable choice for those who frequently travel with rear passengers.
The headroom in the Tata Punch is a notable feature that enhances the overall spaciousness and comfort of the vehicle, ensuring that both front and rear passengers can enjoy a comfortable and unrestricted seating experience. The car's design incorporates a tall roofline, which translates into ample headroom for occupants, irrespective of their height.
Starting with the front passengers, the Tata Punch provides generous headroom, allowing even taller individuals to sit comfortably without their heads coming into contact with the roof. This design consideration is particularly important for driver and front passenger comfort during long journeys, as it eliminates any feelings of confinement and ensures a relaxed seating posture.
The rear passengers are equally well-catered to in terms of headroom. The car's design philosophy extends to the rear cabin, where the ample headroom continues to provide a spacious and comfortable environment for passengers. Whether it's children or adults occupying the rear seats, the Tata Punch ensures that there is no compromise on headroom, allowing everyone to sit comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted.
The careful attention to headroom for both front and rear passengers aligns with the modern standards of automotive design, where passenger comfort is a significant consideration. It reflects Tata Motors' commitment to providing a well-thought-out and comfortable interior space for all occupants, regardless of their seating position in the car.
The Tata Punch, a compact suv that has garnered attention for its safety features, comes equipped with dual front airbags as a standard offering across its variants. These airbags are a crucial component of the vehicle’s safety system, designed to provide an additional layer of protection for both the driver and the front passenger in the event of a collision.
Airbags are essential in modern vehicles for mitigating injuries during accidents. In the case of the Tata Punch , the inclusion of dual front airbags demonstrates the manufacturer’s commitment to passenger safety. Upon impact, these airbags deploy rapidly to cushion the occupants from hitting the vehicle’s hard surfaces, thereby reducing the risk of severe injuries. The presence of airbags as a standard feature is particularly commendable, as it ensures that even the base models of the Tata Punch are equipped with this critical safety technology.
In addition to airbags, the Tata Punch is outfitted with a comprehensive suite of other safety features, further enhancing its safety profile. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) is a key feature. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during emergency braking, thereby maintaining vehicle control and reducing the chances of a skid. EBD complements ABS by distributing braking force among the wheels according to their load, ensuring effective stopping power and stability.
Another notable safety feature in the Tata Punch is corner stability control. This technology helps maintain the vehicle’s stability when navigating turns, particularly at higher speeds or under adverse conditions. It works by applying brakes to individual wheels, helping to counteract any tendency of the vehicle to skid or lose traction, thereby enhancing safety during cornering.
Hill hold control is an additional safety feature that provides convenience and safety, especially on inclines. This system prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when starting from a stop on a hill. It temporarily holds the brakes, giving the driver time to move their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator without the car rolling back. This feature is particularly useful in hilly terrain and congested urban settings with sloping roads.
