The Swedish carmaker is bringing back the XC70 nameplate after almost a decade, wherein previously it was used for a five-door crossover estate that was discontinued in 2016.
It will be based on Volvo's Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, and is also slated to be the carmaker's longest-range plug-in hybrid vehicle till date.
Although its powertrain details are scarce at the moment, the XC70 is stated to have an electric-only range of 200 kms on the CLTC cycle. That said, given that the CLTC cycle applies only to the Chinese market, we do expect it to have a reasonably lower range figure when tested on the more widely-accepted WLTP cycle. Its technical details are still under wraps, but it is expected to get a battery that will be larger than the XC60 PHEV's 18.8 kWh unit.
As seen from the previous teasers, the XC70 PHEV is said to borrow design cues from the carmaker's all-electric offerings: the EM90 and EX90. Key styling elements include Thor Hammer-shaped LED DRLs, active grille shutter, and C-shaped LED taillights.
The XC70 will initially be sold only in China, while its introduction in other global markets will take place later.
