Ford has confirmed it is set to restart car manufacturing operations in India. However, the brand is not coming back just yet.
Ford has signed a Letter of Intent with the Government of Tamil Nadu to restart manufacturing operations at its Chennai plant.
The American automaker will begin operations at the Chennai plant but is repurposing the facility to focus on vehicle exports following the brand’s Ford+ growth plan.
Under the Ford+ growth plan, the automaker has split its business into multiple verticals mainly for electric and ICE vehicles. The plan will also see improved efficiencies to generate stronger cash flows and achieve profitable growth.
Ford has not yet shared details on when it plans to restart manufacturing at its Chennai plant. More details will be revealed in due course.
Ford ceased local manufacturing in 2021 after over two decades of independent operations. This announcement could mark its return in India.
