OTA Updates For Cars: What Are They?

The world is skyrocketing towards a software-driven future at breakneck speed. Software is already a part of everything imaginable, and the trend keeps on evolving. Software in cars is a valuable commodity for the car industry since more features can be added that directly benefit the customers. OTA systems are inventions that have taken the world by storm, and understandably so. They are revolutionising how we get and perceive all our information while travelling inside a car.

What are OTA systems?
OTA or Over-The-Air updates are a new introduction in the world of software inside cars. Car manufacturers have been incorporating software systems that can provide information “over-the-air” (simply through the internet). These systems let cars function like smartphones and other electronic gadgets.

Importance
OTA updates are critical in today's day and age. The software needs to be constantly updated in the car, but OTA updates negate that factor. The software-related recalls are eliminated by OTA updates allowing the customer to download updates over the internet and install them at their convenience.
OTA updates enhance the infotainment system experiences. OTA updates allow the car to access information like navigation routes, temperature conditions, traffic ahead, nearby petrol pumps etc., something they might need a smartphone for.
The value of a car keeps depreciating with time. OTA updates ensure that the experience stays fresh and new to have a good time.

Working of OTA systems
For OTA systems to work, the car needs to be set up with a TCU (Telematics Control Unit), a piece of hardware. This TCU allows the system to access the internet and provide the information required for the user.
Many big brand companies have been getting on the technology to improve their cars. The system still needs work and updates, but the system can be handy and make the travel hassle-free for the customer.
Security
Incorporating as many features as possible with the internet is great for car manufacturers to do. But this opens up a whole new realm of troubles, including cyber security. The inclusion of the internet services act like an open invitation for hackers to hack into the system of the cars.
More bodies are being set up to regulate this and allow the car systems to be more secure. Cloud services and secure ways are being developed so that the system updates are safe. More encryptions are being added to allow customers to feel safe.
The possibilities with this technology are endless, and people will have to wait and watch what happens as this technology is developed further.
