FWD vs RWD vs AWD - Pros and Cons

When you're out hunting for the right car to buy, you might encounter the terms FWD, RWD, and AWD being thrown around a lot. While you might know their full forms, there are still too many things associated with them that you need to know in order to make the right choice for yourself. So, here's a complete overview of the terms FWD, RWD, and AWD, as well as their pros and cons.
What do the terms FWD, RWD, and AWD mean?

In order to understand the difference between the three, you first need to know how the drivetrain of a car works. The most basic description is that the drivetrain delivers the power that the engine generates to wheels, allowing the car to move. In that sense, FWD or front-wheel-drive cars deliver this power to the two front wheels. On the other hand, RWD or rear-wheel-drive cars deliver this power to the two rear wheels. And as for AWD or all-wheel-drive cars, the power is delivered to all four wheels at the same time.
As a side note, there are two kinds of AWD cars. While regular AWD vehicles have all four wheels working at all times, the second kind called 4WD cars has the ability to toggle this system on or off. This means 4WD vehicles allow you to choose between using the two front wheels or the two rear wheels when you don't want to engage four-wheel drive.
What type is more fuel efficient?

FWD cars are the most fuel efficient. That's because they have the least amount of power loss when transferring power from the engine to the wheels since the engine is located close to the wheels and is at a perfect angle. RWD cars generate the power at the front and that power has to be transmitted to the rear wheels by making a 90-degree turn in the differential. This results in some power loss and a reduction in fuel efficiency. But the least fuel-efficient type are AWD cars since power has to be transferred to all four wheels all the time.
What type offers more safety?

In terms of safety, the difference between FWD, RWD, and AWD vehicles only comes into the picture in slippery conditions. When you hit the brakes in such a situation, FWD cars tend to understeer as they break traction. And RWD cars tend to oversteer in such situations. Among the two, understeer is the safer form as it slides the car forward in the direction of the travel instead of sideways. But AWD cars break traction on all tyres at the same time. Moreover, if they are designed differently, they can accurately break the traction on the necessary wheels to lead to a safer stop.
What type is the most space efficient?

FWD vehicles are the most space efficient owing to the fact that the front of the car houses both the driving axle and the engine system. This leaves ample space on the rear for fitting whatever the manufacturer wants. RWD cars have the engine at the front and driving axle at the rear, leaving less space for other things. And as you'd guess, AWD cars are the least space efficient given their complex drivetrains.
What type offers the best acceleration?
Since AWD vehicles deliver better traction, they offer the best acceleration among these three types of vehicles. RWD cars have slightly better acceleration, while FWD cars have the worst acceleration among them all.
That's everything you need to know about FWD, RWD, and AWD cars including understanding the difference between the three. This will help you in making the right choice for yourself.
