  • There are also 8 speakers overall, which is impressive

Tata has unveiled the Tigor EV which is arguably the most important EV for the Indian market considering its rather affordable Rs 11.99 lakh price point. This is Tata's second EV after the Nexon EV which has become the flagbearer for the electric car movement in India. The Tigor EV also manages to offer a similar range of 306 km on offer. Tata has also announced a 'Universe', a sort of synergistic exercise between different business units of the Tata group that are coming together to bring EV infrastructure to India, be it Tata Power, Tata Motors, of course, Chroma stores - from financing, energy, automotive technology to retail, Tata is leveraging its assets to democratise EVs with its automotive arm doing the major heavy lifting by building these mainstream EVs that are within the range of the average Indian, not just globetrotters.

The Tigor EV is amongst the most affordable EVs sold in India

  • Perhaps the most distinct promise of the Tigor EV is the fact that it gives 306 kilometres of range according to ARAI. Using a fast charger it can be charged up to 80 per cent in less than an hour and a full juice using the home charger will get juiced up in 8.5 hours. The 26 kWh lithium-ion battery back is also IP67 water and dust resistant and comes with an 8-year warranty or on 1.6 lakh kilometres of running.
  • It gets a 55 kW permanent magnetic synchronous electric motor which has an output of 74 bhp and 170-newton meters of torque. This is of course lesser than the Nexon EV. But for city driving, it will remain zippy with a 0-60 km/h time of 5.6 seconds. The motor also gets an 8-year warranty.
  • Stylistically the car is based on the Tigor facelift and hence gets projector headlights, fog lamps with integrated LED DRLs and new interiors too. Notably, this is the first EV to be rated by Global NCAP and it gets a 4-star rating which is impressive, to say the least.

  • It comes loaded with tech on the inside too - there is a Harmon sourced sound system that gets 4 speakers and 4 tweeters, basically an 8 speaker system. There is a 7-inch infotainment screen that is home to the Tata IRA connected car interface that also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. IRA comes with over 30 features for remote commands that work with a mobile app.
  • Building on the 4-star rating by Global NCAP, the car also boasts dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with the rear parking camera optional and a seat belt reminder built into the safety suite.
