Highlights

  • McGuinness has 23 titles at the Isle of Man TT, the second-highest ever
  • Joey Dunlop holds the record for most wins with 26 titles
  • McGuinness will be turning 50 in 2022

Twenty-three time Isle of Man Tourist Trophy winner John McGuinness will compete at the 2022 Isle of Man TT, making a return with Honda. McGuinness has re-joined Honda for the 2022 road racing season and will compete at both the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT. McGuinness will team up with British Superbike rider Glenn Irwin at both events. McGuinness left Honda's roads team in early 2018 following his accident at the North West 200 the previous year, which left him with multiple serious injuries. He has won a lot of awards aboard the Honda Fireblade over the years, including 12 TT races onboard the CBR1000RR Fireblade, including five Superbike and six Senior race wins, plus one Superstock victory in 2012.

McGuinness has the most successes at the IOMTT with Honda. He holds the title for second-highest wins with 23 wins after Joey Dunlop's 26 wins.

In 2017, McGuinness teamed up with Guy Martin for Honda, but the just-introduced Fireblade had issues, which were believed to have led to the crash in 2017 which caused him a serious leg injury, that prevented him from racing in early 2018, after he had switched over to the reborn Norton factory effort. In 2019, he had an unsuccessful year riding both Norton and Honda bikes. He signed with a Kawasaki team in 2020 and 2021, but the races were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Honda Racing UK team will be taking part in both the Superstock and Superbike classes at the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT races, as well as the Senior TT, which McGuinness won aboard the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade in 2015. In 2022, McGuinness will be marking his 100th Isle of Man TT race in the opening Superbike race. With 23 wins at the Isle of Man, McGuinness has the second-highest total of any TT racer. Joey Dunlop holds the record for most number of wins with a tally of 26 wins at the IOMTT.
