  • The i4 electric sedan will be the first-of-its-kind in the luxury space
  • India will get the BMW i4 eDrive40 variant with the 81.5 kWh battery
  • The BMW i4 will be launched in India on May 26, 2022

BMW India unveiled the new i4 electric sedan at the India Art Fair held in New Delhi. The automaker has also confirmed that the new i4 will be launched in India on May 26, 2022. Interestingly, the i4's launch will coincide with another electric offering, the Kia EV6 electric crossover that's set to make its India debut on the same day. The i4 is the second BMW branded electric vehicle for India after the iX and was announced late last year as part of the Bavarian automaker's electric onslaught for the Indian market. Apart from the iX and i4, BMW India Group also introduced the MINI Cooper SE earlier this year in the country.

India gets the BMW i4 in the eDrive40 variant with the 81.5 kWh battery pack

The BMW i4 arrives in India in the eDrive40 variant and packs an 81.5 kWh battery pack that powers the electric motor to produce 330 bhp and 430 Nm of peak torque. BMW claims a range of 483 km on a single charge as per the WLTP cycle. The i4 can be charged using a Level 2 wall-box through AC power at 11 kW, which can charge the battery up to 100 per cent in 8 hours. The electric sedan can handle DC fast-charging up to 200 kW, which will be able to provide a range of 142 km in about 10 minutes.

The BMW i4 is based on the new-generation 4 Series and comes with a similar design. The styling has been tweaked with the EV-specific kidney grille, LED headlamps, and blue accents. It retains the signature coupe roofline of the 4 Series that gives the model its sharp look. Inside, the cabin is covered in sustainable materials and comes with a 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control screen that share a frameless bezel and appear as a single unit. The infotainment system runs the iDrive 8 software and supports over-the-air updates.

There will be a 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control screen that share a frameless bezel and appear as a single unit.

The i4 and iX represent the fifth generation electric car technology from the Bavarian manufacturer. The BMW i4 will arrive in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and will not have a direct rival, at least initially. This should give the electric sedan a significant advantage, especially with BMW's famed driving dynamics available in the electric iteration as well.
